“Gluten free” is a term that is here to stay. It is not a fad like some diets that come and go.

“Gluten free” is a term that is here to stay. It is not a fad like some diets that come and go. Over the years, gluten-containing grains such as wheat, rye, and barley have been structurally modified and over processed, resulting in a product that our guts sometimes have a hard time breaking down, digesting, and absorbing. This can lead to inflammation in the gut. Inflammation in the gut can lead to a host of other issues so for athletes, it’s sometimes a wise idea to think outside of the box of pasta or the bag of bread. Dairy, especially conventional dairy, can also lead to gut inflammation. There are two proteins in dairy, whey and casein with casein being the culprit of potential issues. Although dairy can fit into a balanced diet, opting for foods such as yogurt and kefir, eating organic whenever possible, and incorporating dairy free alternatives such as coconut yogurt and almond milk can help keep your gut balanced as well.
